Why support the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA)?

You love cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) and just like us you believe that all whales, dolphins and porpoises belong in the wild, should be protected and have safe habitats.

As the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA), we work towards a world where all whales, dolphins and porpoises are free and protected. We want to celebrate these beautiful animals and create a feeling of connection between people and cetaceans.

The WCA consists of grass root NGO’s, whale watching operators and passionate individuals who are based all over the world from all walks of life. By sharing our knowledge we develop multilevel strategies for the protection of cetaceans, appropriate to different areas and situations.

What we do in short

  • Support initiatives to free captive cetaceans and develop true sanctuaries as an alternative solution
  • Develop plans for the protection of the different cetacean species and their habitats
  • Develop guidelines for sustainable whale tourism
  • Offer certification for sustainable whale watching operators
  • Offer education programs for whale watching guides and operators
  • Award Whale Heritage Sites to recognise special areas where there is a strong connection between the community and whales
  • Develop campaigns to inform the general public about threats to cetaceans
  • Work together with industry stakeholders to reduce threats to cetaceans and stop the promotion of cetacean shows
  • Organise conferences where we bring people together to learn and share their knowledge about cetaceans

As our partners come from various backgrounds and places, we have a wealth of knowledge. Because many of our partners are involved in research, we are able to base our initiatives on scientific – and current information.

Unfortunately, being dedicated and passionate alone does not pay the costs of carrying out our plans and campaigns. Often, we also need assistance in other ways to be able to keep on fighting for cetaceans all over the world.

It is great if you want to help us with our work!

Here is a short list of ways you can help us out (and they do not always cost money ???? )

  • Make a donation, a once off or monthly
  • Become a partner and help with the development of new plans and campaigns
  • Organise a fundraising activity
  • Treat yourself or someone else to something from the WCA Shop
  • Volunteer for us (send us a message at admin@worldcetaceanalliance.org to let us know how you would like to help!)
  • Choose a certified whale watching operator when you go whale watching
  • Reduce your plastic use
  • Eat MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified fish
  • Inform others about cetaceans and inspire them to become active for their protection
  • Don’t visit or support places where cetaceans are being held in captivity for entertainment

OUR JOURNEY

On World Oceans Day 2013 the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) launched as a fledgling partnership made up of a group of dedicated grass roots NGOs, passionate individuals, and commercial whale watching businesses desperate to make a positive difference for whales and dolphins.
