WCA citizen science project: Mapping 'Areas of Concern' for Cetaceans worldwide

Science Working Group

Co-Chairs:

Luena Fernandes, Instituto Baleia Jubarte, Brazil

Andre Cid, AIMM, Portugal

The Science Working Group brings together data to support the WCA priorities and strategies. Our role is to gather, collate, and analyze data on cetaceans to support conservation work at species, population, prospective protected area, and policy level.   We want to encourage and promote solution-based research, and believe in the importance of citizen science and public opinion, as well as more traditional scientific research, recognising the value of both.

The Group also aims to assist the work of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List for cetaceans, with a special focus on threatened and data deficient species.  One of our goals for the coming year is to work collaboratively to further protect beaked whales and their habitats.
