26 Oct Upcyled Ghost and Fishing Gear

Being innovative and putting value into abandoned fishing and ghost gear is one way to address the problem of plastic within our oceans.

 

Recycling and upcycling waste materials from the oceans such as fishing nets, and reusing them to fill a need for materials such as clothing and shoes is one way in which to both reduce the amount of plastics within the oceans and limit the use of new materials. Some companies take ghost fishing gear and upcycle it into different products such as swimwear, skateboards and sunglasses. Awareness of these companies and their products can in turn create a higher demand for a product that currently has no value, yet is found in abundance, washed up on beaches all over the world.

Our #neteffect interns are currently based around the globe raising awareness of ghost fishing gear to members of the public, informing them of these companies and their products.

Together we can help create a value for a currently worthless product which causes so much devastation to our marine wildlife.
